Description

From the railway station at Rhäzüns we soon reach the water's edge, our nostrils filling with the fresh air from the wetlands. The Rhäzünser Rheinauen are among the most best preserved wetland areas in Switzerland and are considered of national importance. We continue along the single trail as it rises and falls until we reach the flatter section along the Rhine dam after Rothenbrunnen. Along the Polenweg to Reichenau the sparse forest lets us glimpse wonderful views of these unique Rheinauen wetlands. Along this section of the route the Hinterrhein meanders from one side of the valley to the other. In Reichenau, the confluence of the Hinterrhein and Vorderrhein, we once again switch to the other side of the river and roll on towards Bonaduz. After a short, steep ascent up to the high plateau of Rhäzüns and Bonaduz the route continues past Sogn Gieri (St. Georg), which is well worth a stop. The Romanesque church, more than 1,000 years old, is famous beyond Switzerland's borders for its astonishing and beautifully preserved murals. After the rewarding visit of Sogn Gieri we happily cycle back to Rhäzüns.

Description

Graubünden’s 150 km route between Müstair and Mustér (Disentis) presents the stunning valley landscapes of the Münstertal and dreamy Susaunatal, deep Schanfigg and varied Cadi– together with the four challenging passes, Costainer, Scaletta, Strela and Chrüzlipass.

Physical efforts are however rewarded by the sight of picturesque Graubünden villages nestled between beautiful valley landscapes. Each valley portrays an independent community concerning history, culture, religion and laws. In fact, Graubünden reflects a concentrated picture of European variety – where the Jakobsweg Graubünden leads from east to west through the impressive region.

Müstair with signs of Middle Ages lifestyle – and preceding Chur, Switzerland’s oldest town, Tschiertschen’s cathedral (Jakobskirche), displaying a mural from the hand of the Waltensburg master. And before Disentis, numerous traces remind one of the ancient pilgrims’ paths. From Amsteg the way then leads through the Urnerland to the National Route 4 ViaJacobi.

Geheimtipp

Book Package «Jakobsweg Tour»  and benefit from the free luggage transport from hotel to hotel.

Sicherheitshinweis

Attention stage 43.07:

In October and from the end of April to the end of May, the Swiss Army conducts shooting exercises in the S-chanf area. Thus, the area between S-chanf  and the mountain inn Dürrboden over the Scaletta Pass is closed, or it is life-threatening to walk there as a pilgrim.

Description

The Surselva is more than a mere mountain valley. The Surselva - meaning «above the forest» – is a world apart, with its own language (Sursilvan), its own history shaped by the Disentis Monastery and the mountain passes, its own breed of men and a natural character shaped by one particular element, one which is continually gaining in value: water. It’s for a good reason that the official source of the Rhine rises at Tomasee near the Oberalppass. The water, collected in dozens of reservoirs is an energy provider. It has also eaten its way through the world’s largest mapped rockslide at Flims. It has created the imposing Ruinaulta Gorge, which can hardly be beaten for ruggedness – particularly when seen from the vantage platform at Conn.

The hike through the Surselva leads through an intact landscape but also arouses culturally historic curiosity, whether with the paintings in the Waltensburg Protestant Church or in the light of the mystifying menhir at Falera. The finale of four very varied hiking days is a tour around the old town quarter of Chur, Switzerland’s oldest town.

Book Package «Senda Sursilvana»  and benefit from the free luggage transport from hotel to hotel.

Description

The village of Sumvitg is located near the Anterior Rhine - the Rein Anteriur. The Romansh language is still very much anchored here.

The route runs along the main road for a while until the silence begins at Rabius. Sections of hiking trail alternate with forest and alpine roads. Above Trun, you come to the settlement of Caltgadira, where the well-known pilgrimage church of Maria Licht has been a beautiful baroque building since 1683.

Now it's time to gain altitude. Over long stretches on hiking trails, you finally reach the village of Schlans. A Grisons mountain village could hardly be more original. A short walk through the alleyways is definitely worthwhile. The hike to Dardin continues for three kilometers on a paved side road, allowing you to relax and enjoy the mountain scenery. The final ascent to Brigels, again on well-maintained hiking trails, completes the day's hiking.

Geheimtipp

Visit the pilgrimage church of Maria Licht (Nossadunna) in Caltgadira.

The mountain village of Schlans on the steep sunny slope is worth a long break.

The family mountain village of Brigels is not only a good place to spend the night, but also well worth a tour of the village.

It is also possible to stay overnight at the start of the stage in Rabius.

Sicherheitshinweis

The tour should not be undertaken in uncertain weather conditions. Weather changes are frequent in the mountains. If a rain front or similar approaches during the hike, you should turn back in good time.

Good hiking boots with a good tread, clothing suitable for the weather (rain jacket), first aid kit, drink, food, possibly hiking poles

Description

The starting point of the first stage is left up to the hiker: directly from the station or by bus to Meiersboden. The signposting to the Schanfigger Höhenweg begins at the St. Hilarienbrüggli. On the way, you pass the hotel management school in Passugg. The building of the former spa hotel is impressive. The Grida-Praden section of the trail is physically demanding, but the reward is wild and romantic passages in the Steinbachtobel. You then pass the village sawmill in Praden. Afterwards you can see the village church from the 17th century. Then you walk partly on the Churer Alpweg (before 1890) past the larch forest to Tschiertschen. In the village centre is the 15th-century church with exposed relics of late Gothic frescoes and a listed Toggenburg organ from 1820. If you still have energy left, visit Füxliweg. A special attraction is also the Tschiertscher Säge (saw), which is still operated by the water power of the Sagenbach stream.

Geheimtipp

Visit the Güdahof farm shop - with honey from the region, syrup and jams made from seasonal fruit or herbs from the farm garden, Filisurer ice cream and gift articles to complement the carefully compiled range. Bring a piece of your holiday home with you!

Sicherheitshinweis

In bad weather, the Steinbachtobel can be difficult to pass. Partly demanding physical requirements. Alternatively, parts of the route can be completed by public transport.

Description

Traders, armies, kings and emperors all crossed the Alps via the Septimer route. Its advantages were the convenient location with a direct north-south link and ideal topographical conditions. Finds of lead slingshot on the Septimer bear witness to the fact that the Roman army made early use of the pass. Above all in the High Middle Ages, the Septimerpass was one of the most important trading routes and brought wealth to the Bishop of Chur. Today, one of Switzerland's most diverse cultural and long-distance hiking routes travels over what was once an arduous Alpine crossing. From Chur to Chiavenna in Italy, it gradually traces a chequered history and leads through three different cultural regions. The natural setting is just as varied. There is plenty to discover, the open space of the high plateau in the Surses, the rocky landscape at the head of the Septimerpass and the Mediterranean mountain valleys of Bergell and Valchiavenna.

Geheimtipp

The Via Sett is accessible from mid-June to mid-October, depending on weather conditions. The 93 km long long-distance hike from Chur (CH) to Chiavenna (IT) can be hiked in 6 or 7 daily stages. The average walking time per day is 4 - 7 hours, and the stages can be simplified by public transport.
