Town Square Chur

Hegisplatz

Hegisplatz
Hegisplatz
A cozy place in the old town of Chur.

Description

Hegis square is lined with several historical buildings: Hegishaus is said to have been occupied as early as the 16th and 17th century by the Zurich family Hegi, after whom the square is named. The Schuhmacher guild house with its tower from 1510 and a late Gothic entrance door. The Square was originally named New Tower Square after it. The red house was purchased, refurbished and extended by an enclosed baroque garden by Commissari Rudolph von Salis in 1637. The "Haus zum Meerhafen" or "Sea Harbour House" with its box-shaped wooden structured dates from the time immediately after the fire of Chur in 1464. It's unclear how the house got its name.

Park Chur

Rosenhügel park

Rosenhügel Chur
Rosenhügel park

Description

The Rose Hill looks back on a long and gloomy past: As early as the 14th century, the hill at the foot of the Pizokel was used - not for recreation, but as an execution site. In 1836 the gallows was dismantled. Soon after, the hill was to be given a new lease of life and it was opened and made accessible around 1850 as the first public landscape park. Where judges were once held, colorful flowers now bloom and a fountain bubbles peacefully at the place where the executions took place. Located just above the city, the park offers a beautiful panoramic view over Chur and the surrounding area.

Access
The Rosenhügel is accessible via the Malixerstrasse (between the Obertor roundabout and the Rosenhügel restaurant), once directly opposite the Rosenhügel restaurant and once halfway between the roundabout and the restaurant.

Gigerplatz mit Brunnen und Touchscreen-Konsole
Memorial square of the well-known Chur artist HR Giger.

Description

Since November 2015, the square at the junction of Vazerolgasse and Storchengasse has been called Gigerplatz. This is in honour of Hans-Ruedi Giger (1940 - 2014), who was born at Storchengasse 17 and later achieved worldwide fame under his artist name HR Giger. Since the renaming of the square, a simple plaque at Giger's birthplace also commemorates the Oscar-winning creator of the alien monster.

In 2021, the Gigerplatz was upgraded with a new intervention on the initiative of the association "Pro HR Giger" and the city of Chur. The newly designed "Storchenbrunnen" fountain from 1880 is, along with the St. Martin fountain, the oldest, largely original natural stone fountain in Chur's old town. As part of the project, the fountain was framed with black natural stones and the HR Giger logo was embedded in the natural stone base plate on the front side. The highlight of this intervention, however, is in the bottom of the fountain. The impressive fountain with the large octagonal water basin received 21 aluminium plates on the bottom, which were cast with a finely chiselled "biomechanical" pattern according to the original casting pattern and now give the fountain a new dimension and make it the "Giger fountain". The same plates already adorn the Giger Bar in Chur West as well as the bar of the same name in the HR Giger Museum in Gruyères in the canton of Fribourg. The project is rounded off with a touch-screen console where visitors can find out about the life and work of HR Giger in five languages. News from the Pro HR Giger Association will also be regularly posted there.

Parkanlage Hirschbühl
The park "Hirschbühl" and the adjacent area "Rosenhügel" form a green recreation area in the immediate vicinity of the city that invites visitors to linger and explore.

Description

A little more than 100 steps lead from the city to Hirschbühl. Located above the old town, the park invites you to linger and discover. The centrepiece of the complex is the so-called Temple of Gifts - a historic pavilion that was originally used to present the trophies of the Federal Shooting Festival of 1842.  It was rebuilt on the Hirschbühl, after it had previously stood elsewhere on the Rosenhügel and was finally restored. Right next to the Temple of Gifts, a terrace invites you to enjoy the view.  A maple tree provides shade on the square, the wall and benches invite you to linger. Also not far from the Temple of Offerings is a show garden with medicinal plants. From Hirschbühl you can continue on gravel paths to the historic park on the Rosenhügel.   Both on the Hirschbühl and on the Rosenhügel there are impressive views towards Surselva, Calanda and the city.

Park Chur

Fontana park

Fontanapark
The picturesque Fontana Park is the ideal place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, to enjoy the atmosphere or to comfortably read a book.

Description

Fontana Park is set in the heart of Chur. It is the perfect place to escape the bustle of the city, to enjoy the atmosphere, or to read a book. In its present form, Fontana Park has reverted to the boundaries of the former Baroque garden from before 1860. With its refurbishment, the park has become a multi-purpose recreation area. The flower parterre in front of the old building still has its original length. Due to the lack of historical sources, the planting has been done in the contemporary style. Changing flower beds alternate side by side with boxwood beds, and potted plants complement the floral aspect.

Open daily from 7am-9pm

Town Square Chur

Arcas square

Arcas
Arcas Platz mit St. Martinskirche

Show all 5 images

Arcas Platz, Chur
The Arcas, surrounded by historic rows of houses and lined with several cafés and restaurants, is probably the most beautiful square in Chur.

Description

Picturesque and medieval - that is how the Arcas looks today. Before 1971, however, it was quite a different story, for until then warehouses obscured the square. Architect Theodor Hartmann had these demolished and integrated an underground garage into his new design concept. Nevertheless, the Arcas has still retained its medieval character, for the row of houses extending towards the Plessur river are built onto the old city walls. And these - as can be seen at Arcas 25 - are thought to date from the 13th century. Nowadays, the medieval houses, with the modern open spaces in between, give the square a picturesque touch.

The Arcas is arguably the most beautiful city square in Chur. With its historical town houses and cafes surrounding the open space, it exudes an almost Mediterranean ambiance. During events, the Arcas becomes a picturesque stage in the heart of the Old Town. Of course, there is also a well where you can refresh yourself. The well on Arcas square is made of Gneis rock from the village of Andeer. It is based on the myth about the spirits on Scalära.

Castle Chur

Bishop's castle

Bischöfliches Schloss
Above the old town is the court district with its canons' houses, the episcopal castle and the cathedral.

Description

The court lies above the old town. Via a staircase and through a gate tower with a Gothic inn you get to a slanted, triangular square flanked on either side by the canons' residences.

On the upper right corner the square is met by the episcopal castle. The western counterpart to the cathedral got its present form during the time of Bishop Joseph Benedict von Rost (in office  1728-54). The complex is built around a central courtyard. The facade with its no more than three window axes is divided into two wide and one narrow central section by ascending pilasters. The lateral parts are topped by gables, the central part by a lucarne-like structure. For the sake of symmetry, the portal on the left-hand side got a counterpart on the right, which is merely the entrance to the carriage shed. The doors are adorned with bronze lion heads holding the door knockers. Doors and windows are decorated with stucco. Joseph Benedict von Rost was originally from South Tyrol, and it is little surprising that his work is heavily influenced by Austrian baroque. The Bishop succeeded in making the building step out of the cathedral's shadow and giving it its own unique character. Nowhere else in Graubünden will you find a sculpted exterior decoration as rich as this.
