Sewing-Machine Museum

Nähmaschinenmuseum
A journey through the history of the sewing machine.

Description

The Sewing-Machine Museum in Chur exhibits 120 selected sewing machines of various makes and countries of origin. These exhibits are taken from a comprehensive collection of some 300 historical machines, which has been built up over several years by museum founder and sewing-machine technician Bernd Pittermann. The items on show include manual sewing machines, electrically-operated machines and machines designed for children. A few industrial machines are also on show, alongside their domestic equivalents. The collection is complemented by a series of historical accessories, photographs and advertising signs.

The museum pays particular attention to the development of the sewing machine from 1871 to 1940, and individual highlights of the collection include a machine made by Loewe of Berlin (Germany). All the machines are in working order, and some of them can be tried out.

Public Facility Chur

Heiligkreuz Church

Heiligkreuzkirche
Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, Masanserstrasse Chur

Description

The complex of the Catholic Heiligkreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) and the adjoining parish centre occupies a prominent position at the Masanserstrasse/Giacomettistrasse road axis in the Masans district of Chur. It was built in 1966-69 by Walter M. Förderer and is one of the most important exposed concrete religious buildings in Switzerland. Both the nave and the massive tower have a clear, tiered structure that make the building look like a large expressive sculpture. The column-free, gradually opening semi-circular main room is mostly indirectly lit, which makes it seem like a rock cave.

Roman excavations

Römische Ausgrabungen
Schutzbauten Römische Ausgrabunden
Today's Welschdörfli district of Chur has a settlement continuity that stretches from the Neolithic period to the present day. Roman buildings are still recognizable today on the Ackermann site.

Description

Several prehistoric settlements and remains of a Roman road station have been discovered in Welschdörfli, the old town district south of the Plessur. You can visit the excavations and discoveries on the Ackermann grounds on Seilerbahnweg.

The protective structures covering the archaeological sites from the Roman era were built in 1986 according to designs by local architect Peter Zumthor. They do not only protect the finds, they are also a museum and architectural masterpiece. The weighty building with its delicate rilled outer surface is reminiscent of the original Roman edifices.

Historical Site Chur

Town Hall City of Chur

Rathaus
Late medieval building complex between Reichsgasse and Poststrasse

Description

Something is a bit crooked about Chur’s politics – at least, that’s what you might think if you took a closer look at the Town Hall. Due to its uneven ground plan and the sloping ridge of the roof, the building appears to be rather out of joint. That has nothing to do with the politics, but rather to the building’s history. After the city fire in 1464 it was reconstructed, and was subsequently renovated and extended on a number of occasions. Until 1554 it also housed the Spital zum Hl. Geist hospital. The interior of the Rathaus, with its cultural assets from various epochs, bears witness to its varied history.
