Mountain Summit Chur

Rote Platte 1506m

Markant: Die Rote Platte von unten gesehen
Aussicht von der Roten Platte
The view from the top of the Rot Platte is breathtaking.

Description

A prominent vantage point that stands out from the middle of the fabled Scaläratobel ravine and is clearly visible as reddish peak from the Chur side. The summit is at 1,506 m and is part of Montalin massif, the main summit of which is 760 meters above the Rote Platte. The second half of the hiking route is pretty steep and the ascent can be quite slippery after it has rained or snowed. The final climb to the summit and the summit itself are exposed and are only advisable for sure-footed hikers with a head for heights. But the view from the summit to Chur and the Rhine Valley is simply breath-taking.

Obertor

Obertor
Obertor
The Obertor is a historical landmark of the city of Chur and at the same time the entrance gate to the car-free old town.

Description

The Obertor, together with the Malteserturm and the Sennhofturm, are the towers of the medieval fortifications that are still standing today. Thanks to its attractive appearance, the Obertor soon advanced to become one of Chur's landmarks. While the four-storey building, which narrows towards the top, fits into the overall structure of the settlement, at the same time it stands apart from the other terraced buildings due to its light exterior. The paintings in the archway, some of which are based on old views of the city, date from the 20th century.

Bärenloch

Bärenloch
Bear hole - two medieval courtyards.

Description

The Bärenloch, or "bear hole", is one of the most enchanted places in the city of Chur - and at the same time one of the bestpreserved parts of the Old Town. The origin of this name, given to the two interior courtyards between Arcas Platz and Kirchgasse, is unknown - yet it is an appropriate description all the same. However, in ancient documents the dark Bärenloch is referred to as "curschellas", a late Latin term simply meaning "small courtyard rooms". Indeed, the two rooms still seem small and cramped to this day, thus making the Bärenloch a good example of the living situation in late Medieval Chur

Naherholungsgebiet Mühlbach Obere Au
Enjoy sunny walks along the renatured Obertorer Mühlbach, which flows through the area of the Obere Au sports facilities.

Description

The Obertorer Mühlbach stream was relocated over a length of about 550 m. The course of the stream begins at the end of the intersection Rossboden- / Pulvermühlestrasse and ends at the bus stop at Oberen Au. Water is flowing through the ecologically designed, renaturalised riverbed since mid-April 2019. The amount of water has been reduced and the stream can therefore also be entered. Best place to enter it is at the Kneipp water-treading basin near the boccia facility.

The renaturalised riverbed thus enables habitats for animals and a local recreation area for walkers and cyclists. The boccia and skate park are located right next to the inviting banks of the Mühlbach stream. Curved pedestrian bridges allow safe crossing of the stream and large concrete steps along the shore at the skate park invite you to linger.

In the area of the field sports stadium construction site, the Mühlbach runs temporary underground over a length of 30 metres until 2025.

Opening hours

The Mühlbach stream is freely accessible at any time.

Haldenstein climbing garden

Klettergarten Haldenstein
The founding father of Graubünden's climbing gardens: Since the 1950 climbers have been flocking to the former stone quarry in Haldenstein.

Description

Haldenstein climbing garden is considered Switzerland's first of its kind. Already in the 1950s it was a popular "playground" for climbers in and around Chur. Thanks to a great restoration effort in 2012/2013, many of the routes have been improved, signed and made safer, and there is a new information board with an overview of all the routes.

The climbing garden along the Rhine is divided in 3 sectors: At the far right, beginner routes with degrees from 3 to 5 ( top rope can be set from above). In the middle section there are partially stripped down tours from 5th to 7th degree, up to 3 ropes lengths long. The longest and most rewarding climbs are at the left-hand side. The routes are well marked and secured. It's not advisable to climb in hot or windy weather, but on a sunny day it's possible to climb even in winter.

The network of routes can get a bit confusing, which requires precise study of the topographic layout and good instincts. The terrain is child-friendly and easily accessible within two minutes.

Topographic layout of Haldenstein climbing garden (pdf)

Route tip "Plattenwand"

Access approx. 20 meters left above the first sector, at the bolt and the conspicuous rock pedestal.

1. Sl 5 From bolt right into the dihedral and from the edge straight to first belaly (belays are one oversized bolt and at least one extra bolt).

2. Sl 6+ Move on upwards to the right along the ledges. A beautiful, stimulating climb. You can skip the next belay and go directly 10 meters to the right into the visible dihedral (don't follow the old bolts or those straight up, 7+!). Follow along up to the belay.

3. Sl 6+\\7- The first bolt is a bit too high to be easily reachable. You can overcame the slight overhang with some imaginative movement using the ledge on the top right. Move flat to belay.

4 Sl 5+ Slab climbing through the big slab. First horizontal to the left, then slightly upwards and before the belay through a flat Haldenstein dihedral.

5. Sl 7 Slighty slippery ledges left towards the overhang, the bold on top of the edge is the best handle. Free? As dessert a nice crack up to the belay on old quarry anchors.
