Welschdörfli

Welschdörfli
The Welschdörfli is where Chur's nightlife takes place. In Roman times there was a settlement here with residential buildings, workshops and a thermal bath.

Description

A “pleasure mile” with a Roman past – that is the Welschdörfli. In Roman times, a settlement comprising living quarters, workshops and a thermal spring stood close to where bars now rub shoulders with cabarets. The area was actually inhabited much earlier; excavations on the Ackermann site have resulted in archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic Age (5,000 –1,800 BC). Since 1986 the finds from Roman times have been protected by special buildings designed by Graubünden architect Peter Zumthor and are accessible by the general public.

Mühleturm mit dem grössten Wandgemälde der Schweiz
Rhine mill and duck pond at Untertorer Mühlbach

Description

The pond was created in the middle of the 20th century by the damming of the Untertorer Mühlbach, so that today a turbine plant of 40 kWh can be driven. At the end of the 1820s, the town of Chur built a sawmill here. A mill was built on the site in 1871. While in 1899 two water wheels used the natural gradient of the Mühlbach, in 1959 two Francis turbines with an output of 35 and 65 HP respectively powered the mill. Grüninger Mühlen AG bought the Rheinmühle, including the pond, water channel and turbine, in 1986. In 2018, the Chur artist Fabian "Bane" Florin and his team created the largest mural painting in Switzerland at the Mühleturm.

A hiking trail leads past the pond and along the Mühlebach stream, connecting the town with the Untere Au and the Rhine river.

Description

The Fürhörnli juts on 1'888 m like a balcony out into the abyss and offers a splendid panorama view on the Alpine City of Chur and the surrounding Rhine valley. Altes Gebäu

Altes Gebäu
The Old Building is probably the most beautiful manor house in Chur. Its exterior is unpretentious: an even cube on two floors and structured by means of nine window axes. The interior is richly decorated with the staircase as one of the showpieces.

Description

Magnificent buildings are impressive for a short time, but they quickly become boring. However, this is not the case with the Altes Gebäu. The baroque city palace, built between 1727 and 1729, fascinates above all as a result of its concept as an overall work of art; politician Peter von Salis-Soglio extended his residence by adding a huge garden, the presentday Fontana Park. The interior of the building reveals great attention to detail; one room is entirely decorated in a Chinese style, while another boasts a ceiling with inlaid mountain crystals. Elaborate paintings can also be found adorning the walls.

The Graubündner Kantonalbank has restored the old building with lavish detailed work. Since April 2012, the building has one again been in the possession of the cantonal court and not accessible to the public.

You can enjoy the splendor of the rooms in the old building on a virtual tour.

Rosenhügel

Rosenhügel Chur
Rosenhügel, Rose hill, park and view over the roofs of Chur

Description

The Rosenhügel looks back on a long and grim history: the hill at the foot of the Pizokel was already in use back in the 14th century - not for recreation, but as an execution site. The gallows were dismantled in 1836. Soon afterwards, new life was breathed into the hill and it was made accessible to the public as a landscape park. In the place where people were once condemned, colourful flowers now bloom and on the site where the executions took place, a fountain now bubbles peacefully to itself. Situated just above the city, the park offers a wonderful panoramic view of Chur and the surrounding area.

Currently: Upgrading the park
In order to make the park more attractive, as part of the development along with Hirschbühl in 2018, the entire complex was being enlarged and improved.

Access
Rosenhügel can be accessed from Malixerstrasse (between Obertor roundabout and restaurant Rosenhügel). One entrance directly opposite the restaurant Rosenhügel and one halfway between restaurant and roundabout.

Bei der Arbeit am Mühleturm
The Mühleturm is the "creative landmark" of the city of Chur and the largest mural painting in Switzerland.

Description

For more than two months, the Chur artist Fabian "Bane" Florin and his team created the largest mural painting in Switzerland at the Mühleturm in Chur. The work of art was unveiled at the beginning of November 2018 and shows two hands revealing a Grisons rock crystal at a height of almost 40 metres.

With this creative landmark, Fabian Florin has created a composition in his hometown in which the crystal is symbolic of the energy slumbering in all of us. On the other hand, Florin has built a lighthouse to show travellers the way and provide safety for those returning home.

Fabian Florin came up with the idea for the subject not on a drawing board in a studio in Chur, but in Iceland, 2500 kilometers away. „During a trip through Iceland, I was fascinated by the raw, archaic nature. The more I got to grips with the environment, the earth, the stones in Iceland, the more I realized what an incredible nature we were given in Graubünden,“ says Bane. The respect for time grew as a result of the intensive interactionwith the rock. Time, which is able to extract treasures from the Grison nature. Treasures such as the oldest local gemstone: Grison Cristal. „The oldest city in Switzerland, represented by the oldest Grison gemstone - the picture in my mind‘s eye fitted perfectly,“ Florin continued.
